The M1 Pacific Motorway (F3 Freeway) was closed in both directions due to a chemical spill. All lanes are now open.

The closure caused a queues of approx 3km all the way back to the New England Highway and northbound motorists had to travel through Jesmond and Sandgate to continue their journey north. Traffic came to a stop on the Inner City Bypass (Main Road) at Jesmond.

Two 1000 litre drums of sodium hydroxide was split onto both carriageways.

The RMS and Emergency services setup a central command at the Beresfield rest area, the EPA attended to inspect the incident.

Emergency services blocked drains and begun a cleanup operation and re-opened Northbound lanes after a number of hours however southbound lanes remained closed causing gridlock on the motorway approaches. The RMS requested assistance from NSW Police to handle traffic management.
